In augustus ben ik van Brest overgestoken naar A Coruna. In de voorbereiding op deze tocht gingen mijn gedachten regelmatig uit naar de berichten die circuleren over Orca’s die zeiljachten als een speeltje lijken te zien. Ik zag afgebroken roerbladen en andere schades voorbijkomen. Ook zijn er verhalen over pittige omstandigheden door wind en golven in deze hoek. Het kan er best spoken en dan helpt het ook niet als de oceaan vanuit een behoorlijke diepte het water omhoog stuwt naar de rand waarop wij willen gaan varen. Desondanks besloot ik de oversteek toch te gaan maken want ik wilde wel eens meemaken hoe het is om meerdere dagen en nachten aaneengesloten op zee te zijn.
Met collega schipper Renato, aan boord van de Simaia, zijn we in 3 dagen de Golf overgestoken. Precies in deze 3 dagen hadden we een perfect weervenster wat voor een hele rustige overtocht heeft gezorgd, bijna een beetje te rustig….
Onderweg hebben we bezoek gekregen van een vogeltje dat behoefte had om te schuilen en uit te rusten. Na wat slaap ingehaald te hebben heeft dit vogeltje zich tegoed gedaan aan alle spinnetjes die zich aan boord bevonden en is weer uitgevlogen.
Een tocht van iets meer dan 300 Nm met wind op de kont maakte het een vrij eenvoudige overtocht met een paar gijpen. De wind was ons gunstig gezind waardoor we maar 2 keer een rif hebben moeten zetten. (zei ik al eerder, een beetje te rustig…. )
Het was een ervaring op zich 3 dagen de zon onder te zien gaan en de nacht door te varen. Ik had nog niet eerder de ambitie om bv de oceaan over te steken en langere tijd op zee te vertoeven, maar dat begint nu toch een beetje te kriebelen.
